Desc: Pénitents, Piété Et Tradition: Directed by Jean-Claude Parayre. During the thirteenth century in Avignon was born the first Brotherhood of Penitents. Lay Christian men, simple peasants, artisans, notables, men of the people, have put their devotion at the service of the sick, the poor, or the dying. 790 years later, a number of brotherhoods are still present, especially in Haute-Loire, in the cities of Sainte-Sigolène, Saugues, Tence, Puy-en-Velay. Penitents are always active, united in one faith, united in fraternity, serving the Church and the world. The director, Jean-Claude PARAYRE, took as a "thread" the photographer Lucien SOYERE by following him for three years. He met the penitents of Haute-Loire who present their respective confraternities and the goals they have set for themselves. For the members of each fraternity, each year, the highlight takes place during Holy Week during the procession of the Way of the Cross. Often barefoot, hooded penitents carry the instruments of the Passion. Under the aegis of Cardinal de Cabrières and Frédéric Mistral, the brotherhoods of penitents wished to regroup each year to exchange, to establish links of cooperation and mutual aid.
